Rick Rock (aka Parthenon Huxley) - Sputnik - 1983
from the Big Groovy Records 7" b/w Buddha Buddha

I first heard Rick Rock on the Mondo Montage LP with the song "Buddha Buddha" which is a great song in itself (so is Sputnik). Later came More Mondo with the great Rick Rock tune "Button (Love Is No Sentimental Journey)." With those two songs I was a fan. Both "Buddha Buddha" and "Button" later appeared on the Parthenon Huxley LP "Sunny Nights" on Columbia Records. At a local record show I ran across "THE" Rick Rock single. Side A is "Buddha Buddha" and Side B is "Sputnik." Clocking in at a mere 2:10 "Sputnik" is a great bit of Cold War Power Pop.

In April 2005 I had a chance to play with P Hux (Rick Rock) and showed him this 7". He played "Sputnik" that night in my honor (and gave me a t-shirt). For all things relating to P Hux go here.

Band Members:

This single was the first "local" music I heard after moving to Chapel Hill in the early 80s. That single carved grooves in my bones--I still catch myself humming both songs occasionally. Which leads to a question maybe someone can answer: what is the line after "Our worlds are the same."? Something "injects the pain," but I've never known what. Hot dogs?

from P Hux himself:

Hot Dogs are probably capable of injecting pain, but no, the lines are:

Our worlds are the same
Hot dogs and jet planes

Of course, these days when I perform the song, I normally change it to "soy dogs"...!

Awesome, thanks. Glad I had at least part of it right.
And thanks for the nice words about the Popes. We're still battling with each other same as the old days even though we aren't playing... just not landing as many punches as when we were spry.
